What an old Sapulpa house hides under the tub

Sapulpa grew in bursts: the oil boom, the years after the war, and the 1970s. Each left its own kind of bathroom behind. These are the public numbers, and what they mean once the old tub is out and the floor is open.

Sapulpa homes, on the record

What turns up when the tub comes out

  1. A cast iron tub that weighs several hundred pounds

In the oldest houses the tub is often enameled cast iron, set in place before the walls were finished. It leaves either whole, carried out by several people along a cleared path, or in pieces, broken up inside the room. We decide which on the first visit and cover the floors it passes over.

  2. A drum trap under the floor

Some older tubs drain through a drum trap, a metal canister under the floor that is hard to clear. The International Plumbing Code no longer allows them in new work, so if we find one, it comes out and a standard trap goes in while the floor is open.Source 4

  3. Old supply pipe inside the wall

The city's own water report says lead in tap water comes mostly from service lines and plumbing inside homes. Its 2022 to 2024 sampling came in under the EPA action level overall, but 2 homes tested above it. With the wall already open, replacing the old pipe to the tub and sink costs the least it ever will.Source 3

  4. Floors and corners that have moved

Sapulpa nearly doubled in three years during the Glenn Pool boom, and it had to house those people fast. A century on, floors in houses from that era are seldom dead level and corners seldom square. We check both before we lay out tile, so grout lines run true and the shower floor still falls to its drain.Source 2

  5. Restrooms in century-old buildings on Dewey

The Sapulpa Times reports that most buildings in the downtown historic district are about 100 years old, and East Dewey Avenue is part of Route 66. Their restrooms came long before the ADA. Remodel the main space of a business and federal rules generally require the restroom serving it to be made accessible too, unless that costs more than 20% of the remodel.Source 6

Walk-in shower Sapulpa, OK

Which tub is in your Sapulpa house?

The tub you have now says a lot about the house around it and what we will find when it comes out. Pick the closest one.

New white tub with marble-look wall tile and a wood-look tile apron below it

Cast iron tub

Swap the old tub for one that fits how you bathe

If you still take baths, a new tub goes in the same spot, and with the floor open we see the drain and the framing the old one sat on for decades. If the enamel is the only problem and you love that tub, say so: a refinisher may serve you better than we would, and Jeremy will tell you.

  • A new drain and overflow with the new tub
  • Floor framing looked at before anything goes back
  • Tile set on cement or foam board, never green board

Bathtub replacement Sapulpa, OK

Replace it, convert it, or coat it? What to do with an old tub

Three kinds of companies will quote your old tub three different ways. Here is what each one actually changes, what it leaves alone, and which ones we do.

New soaking tub behind a sliding glass door, with marble-look tile walls, two niches and matte black fixtures

You still take baths: put in a new tub

The old tub comes out, and the drain and wall around it get rebuilt with it.

Getting cast iron out
It goes out whole, which takes several people and a clear path, or it is broken up in the room, which is loud but quick. Either way the floors on the way out get covered.
What the new tub is made of
Enameled cast iron holds heat longest and weighs the most. Enameled steel is lighter but chips more easily. Acrylic is light and warm to the touch.
Size before style
Most alcoves take a 60-inch tub. What decides the model is the alcove's size, which end the drain is on, and whether the new tub can get through every door on its way in.
Tile or panels around it
Tile goes back on cement or foam board under a waterproofing membrane. Acrylic or solid-surface wall panels are a quicker choice we install too, so the walls are your call.
Wide tiled shower with two hand showers, a half wall with glass panels and a small hex tile floor

Nobody uses the tub: turn it into a shower

The same space becomes a tiled walk-in shower. How a conversion works.

The tub valve becomes a shower valve
The old valve and spout come out of the wall, and a new valve goes in at shower height, with a hand shower if anyone may need to sit.
A pan built for this floor
The shower floor is sloped to the drain and waterproofed before tile. In an old house we plan it around a floor that may not be level.
Is it the only tub?
If it is, think about who lives there next. Small children need a tub; some buyers will ask. Keeping one tub elsewhere in the house solves it.
Bars now or later
Wood blocking goes in the open wall, so grab bars can be added any time and hold real weight.

You were quoted a reglaze, a liner or a kit

We do not reglaze tubs. Acrylic wall panels and one-day shower kits we install all the time. Here is a plain account of each option.

Reglazing
A new coating is sprayed over the old tub. It changes the surface and color; the drain, the valve, the wall and the floor stay as they were. It suits a sound tub whose only fault is how it looks.
A liner
An acrylic shell molded to fit is set over the old tub, often with matching wall panels. The old tub stays underneath it, along with its drain and the floor it sits on, so in a house built before 1960 it is worth knowing what is under there first.
Acrylic panels and one-day kits
Acrylic or solid-surface panels go up in place of tile, with no grout lines to scrub, and a one-day kit pairs them with a molded shower base. They go on a flat, sound wall, so if the old surround hides damage, that gets fixed first.
If you reglaze, ask about the stripper
The CDC counted at least 13 bathtub refinishers killed by methylene chloride strippers from 2000 to 2011, and the EPA has since banned those strippers for consumer and most commercial use. Ask what is used and how the room is vented.

What Sapulpa homeowners and business owners ask

What does a bathroom remodel cost in Sapulpa?

Our full remodels usually come to $10,000 to $25,000, and the smallest job we take is $2,500 to $5,000. In an older Sapulpa house the biggest unknown is under the tub: a sound floor keeps the number where we quoted it, while a soft subfloor or an old drum trap adds to it, and you hear about it before we do the work. The nearest job we have documented, a roll-in shower in Glenpool, came to about $7,000 to $8,500. What moves the price.

Do you replace old cast iron bathtubs in Sapulpa?

Yes. We take the old tub out, whole or in pieces depending on the path out of the house, and put in a new tub or build a shower in its place. We do not reglaze, so if your tub only needs a new surface, we will say so and you can call a refinisher. If you would rather skip tile, we also install acrylic wall panels and one-day shower kits.

Can you update an older Sapulpa bathroom and keep its character?

Yes. White subway or hex tile, a pedestal sink and fixtures in a finish that matches the rest of the house all suit an older home, and they go in over new waterproofing. We do not replace windows, so an original bathroom window stays, and we plan the tile around it.

Do you install walk-in tubs for seniors in Sapulpa?

Yes. Two things a brochure skips: a deep tub needs enough hot water to fill it, by the maker's specs, and it has to fit through every door between the truck and the bathroom. If your water heater needs a look, our on-site plumber or one we recommend checks it. If the bather mostly showers, a low-curb or curbless shower may serve them better, and we will say so. Walk-in tubs.

Can you add grab bars and a seat in a Sapulpa bathroom?

Yes. We put wood blocking inside the wall first, so the bars are anchored to it and not just to tile, and we place them where the person using them actually reaches. A fold-down seat and a hand shower on a slide bar make standing optional. Wheelchair accessibility.

Will the VA help pay for a walk-in tub or a safer shower?

It can, for a veteran whose VA doctor prescribes the change for a medical reason. The VA's HISA benefit pays up to $6,800 over a lifetime for a service-connected condition or a disability rated 50% or more, and up to $2,000 otherwise. We never trim materials or labor to fit that limit: anything beyond the prescription, such as a curbless shower in place of an approved curbed one, is billed to you, and we go over it line by line. How we work with the VA.

Can you bring a downtown Sapulpa or Route 66 restroom up to ADA standards?

Yes. We plan clearances, grab bars, fixtures and signage to the 2010 ADA Standards for shops, restaurants, offices and churches, and we are a registered federal vendor (SAM). In a century-old building on Dewey, we look at the space before quoting, and schedule the work around your hours. With two restrooms, one can stay open while we work on the other, if you want it that way. ADA restroom requirements.
