Water per flush
Restroom fixtures are some of the biggest water users in a building, and old ones use far more than new ones.
- Federal limits
- Toilets sold today are capped at 1.6 gallons per flush and urinals at 1.0.
- WaterSense
- The EPA label marks flush-valve toilets at 1.28 gallons or less and urinals at 0.5 or less, tested to flush well.
- Flush valves
- Manual or sensor. Sensors save a hand on the handle but need batteries or power and a sensor set for the stall.
- Waterless urinals
- No water at all, but a cartridge or sealant that has to be changed on schedule, and a drain line sized and sloped for it. Check that your city accepts them before you choose one.
