Finishes, compared
The cheapest wall to put up is rarely the cheapest wall to keep clean.
- Tile
- Porcelain or ceramic: hard, does not soak up water, and lasts for decades. It costs more up front and needs the right board behind it.
- Plastic panels (FRP)
- Fiberglass-reinforced panels go up fast and cost little, but they scuff and dent, and water gets behind them at the seams and edges.
- Epoxy paint
- The lowest cost and fine in some low-use rooms, but it wears where the mop and hands hit it and has to be recoated. Your plans examiner decides where it is allowed.
- Solid surface panels
- Seamless sheets with no grout lines at all. Very clean-looking and easy to wipe, at a higher price.
| Finish | Upfront cost | Holds up to | Weak spot | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tile | Higher | Scrubbing, cleaners, water | Needs the right board behind it | Most public restrooms |
| Plastic panels (FRP) | Low | Light cleaning | Dents, seams, water behind | Back-of-house, tight budgets |
| Epoxy paint | Lowest | Light use | Wears, needs recoating | Low-use rooms, where allowed |
| Solid surface panels | High | Scrubbing, cleaners | Cost | Upscale restrooms, showers |
