Does Medicaid Pay for Walk-In Tubs?

In certain cases the USDA helps paying for walk-in tubs to support elderly, low income, residents of rural areas make home modifications to enable aging in place. In these cases, grants can be used for home and safety improvements including the addition of a walk in tub to one’s bathroom.

State Programs

Some states have non-Medicaid financial assistance programs for the elderly that can be used for home modifications such as walk in tubs. Unfortunately, only a handful of states have these programs at present.

Non-Profit Organizations

In some cases non-profit organizations have community initiatives to offset installation costs of a walk-in tub. These organizations typically do not pay for the cost of materials, including the cost of the tub. One of these programs is called Rebuilding Together.

Are You a Veteran?

The Home Improvements Structural Alterations (HISA) program states Veterans with service-connected disabilities or Veterans with non-service-connected disabilities may receive assistance for any home improvement necessary for the continuation of treatment or for disability access to the home and essential lavatory and sanitary facilities. Tax Deductibility

When a walk-in tub is purchased for medical safety reasons, it may be considered a medical expense and therefore under the materials and the installation costs could be tax deductible as a Medical and Dental Expense.
