What was there
A master shower made of acrylic panels behind a glass door, with a step-over threshold, a shower chair and add-on grab bars.
What we did
- Took out the old shower and hauled it away.
- Built a tiled walk-in shower, 59 by 35 inches and 96 inches tall, with a shampoo niche and the Schluter waterproofing system behind the tile.
- Kept the entry to a half-inch ledge, low enough for a wheelchair to cross.
- Installed two to three grab bars where they are needed.
- Plumbing: new shower valves and fixtures, a new drain, and the plumbing re-centered for the new layout.
- Added a can light in the ceiling above the shower.
What we found once the old shower was out
Two surprises, both written up for the homeowner before we went on:
- The drain trap was not visible after demolition, so we broke out a little concrete to confirm it was really there. That was a $100 change order, signed first.
- There was old tile underneath the existing shower. We took it out at no charge.
What it cost
About $7,000 to $7,500, including the $100 change order. Work started in early September and the finished photos are from two weeks later.
