Oklahoma Bath Professionals is proud to partner with a number of finance companies to offer you affordable and competitive payment plans. During your in-home consultation, our expert will review an array of financing options tailored to meet your needs, including opportunities to purchase your walk-in tub through low monthly payments.
You Have Options
Although there are a variety of options to help paying for walk-in tubs, these opportunities are not offered for everyone. Here are some options our walk-in tub customers may be interested in:
At this time Medicare only provides assistance for Durable Medical Equipment (DME). A walk-in tub is not considered a DME, but a convenience rather than a medical necessity. In addition, walk-in tubs are available for anyone and not exclusive to Medicare beneficiaries or adults with special needs.
There may be rare situations in which Medicare does provide assistance in the form of reimbursement after the purchase if the walk-in tub is considered an absolute medical necessity. The beneficiary would need a medical diagnosis that proves their need and a written prescription that outlines the reasons for needing a walk-in tub to be covered by Medicare. There is no guarantee of Medicare’s assistance with purchasing a walk-in tub or shower.
Those who help families and beneficiaries understand paying for senior care recommend thinking of a walk-in tub as an out-of-pocket purchase, and, if submitting a claim, should be financially prepared to pay the full cost including installation or look for other sources of assistance.
Does Medicaid cover my walk-in tub or shower?
Medicaid may be more likely to provide financial assistance for the purchase and installation of a walk-in tub or shower. However this varies on a state-by-state and case-by-case basis because each state has several different Medicaid programs and there are varied rules governing Medicaid’s policy on the purchase of a walk in tub or “low threshold shower”. For example, in some states Medicaid may support payment for “specialized medical equipment” and “environmental accessibility modifications”. Under these guidelines, Medicaid may pay the purchase price and installation costs for a walk-in tub when medically necessary to help an individual remain living in their home.
You may want to examine the benefits of your state’s Medicaid waivers to see if they will pay for durable medical equipment, assistive technology, home modifications, or environmental accessibility adaptations. To learn more review this complete list of Medicaid waivers relevant to the elderly. You can also contact your local Area Agency on Aging to ask if there is a Medicaid Waiver that will cover any costs associated with the purchase and installation of your walk-In tub or shower.
U.S. Department of Agriculture
In certain cases the USDA helps paying for walk-in tubs to support elderly, low income, residents of rural areas make home modifications to enable aging in place. In these cases, grants can be used for home and safety improvements including the addition of a walk in tub to one’s bathroom.
Some states have non-Medicaid financial assistance programs for the elderly that can be used for home modifications such as walk in tubs. Unfortunately, only a handful of states have these programs at present.
In some cases non-profit organizations have community initiatives to offset installation costs of a walk-in tub. These organizations typically do not pay for the cost of materials, including the cost of the tub. One of these programs is called Rebuilding Together.
Are you a Veteran?
The Home Improvements Structural Alterations (HISA) program states Veterans with service-connected disabilities or Veterans with non-service-connected disabilities may receive assistance for any home improvement necessary for the continuation of treatment or for disability access to the home and essential lavatory and sanitary facilities. The HISA doesn’t cover assistance for a spa, hot tub, or jacuzzi. For more information, contact a Veteran Affairs representative.
When a walk-in tub is purchased for medical safety reasons, it may be considered a medical expense and therefore under the materials and the installation costs could be tax deductible as a Medical and Dental Expense. If you are caring for an elderly parent in your home and make a home modification that includes the addition of a walk-in tub, you may be able to claim the expense under the Dependent Care Tax Credit. Be sure to ask your accountant or tax adviser for details.
